Some of you have realized by reading my posts that I love movies. I have been known to try and have a conversation by only using movie quotes. So obviously, I was extremely sad to learn of John Hughes’ passing yesterday. He was only 59. So young.
In my opinion, he was one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. His movies are classics. A lot of them are filled with the teen angst that not many others could not convey. I grew up on these movies. I must have watched 16 Candles at least a 1,000 times by now. And The Breakfast Club, forget about it! That is one of the best teen movies ever made.
I just IMDB’d him to see his full list of movie credits. Man, there are ones that I didn’t realize were his. Can you say, Mr. Mom and Vacation? And what about Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains, & Automobiles and The Great Outdoors? Seriously. The world lost an excellent story teller.
In honor of Mr. Hughes, I leave you with this quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off:
“Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
I invite you all to give me your favorite John Hughes movie quote in the comments.
UPDATE: Eliza on the Run posted this link in the comments. HOLY SCHNIKES! It’s amazing. Thanks E!
UPDATE #2: Ok, so this POST is AMAZING! (I should be done with updates now.)
I dusted off my CD's of Weird Science, Some Kind of Wonderful & 16-candles last night. John Hughes provided some of the best sound tracks and made FUN movies.
I always thought "She's having a Baby" was underrated. One of my favorite "relationship" movies ever.
His movies (plus Fast Times) will always have a place in my top 20 list.
Nice post.
"No I just want to know how one BECOMES a janitor…" or "Have you ever seen elephantiasis of the testicles?"
Man, oh man. I was so sad to hear this news. He was only the greatest writer/director EVER in my opinion. Maybe it's just because I'm old and his movies all totally touched me, but I looooooved him. And you totally beat me to the punch on doing a post about him! 😉
The Breakfast Club is – by all accounts – my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. No kidding. I can recite every single word of that freaking movie. Literally seen it HUNDREDS of times.
And I just happened to pop in both Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles – back to back – a couple weekends ago while I was cleaning house. Also know the words of those movie by heart.
And come on… Planes Trains & Automobiles? Uncle Buck? Who doesn't LOVE those movies!?
My quotes:
"The chicks cannot hold the smoke, that's what it is." -The Breakfast Club
"You're stewed, buttwad. I'm telling mom and dad everything. I'm even thinking about making up some shit." -Weird Science
"Where's your other hand? Between two pillows. Those aren't pillows!!" -P, T & A

John Hughes will go down in history as a person who helped form an entre generation through his films. It becomes really amazing when you look at the actors who got their start or got a career kick start – Matthew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, John Candy, Judd Nelson, Macauly Caulkin – the list goes on and on. Not to mention that Jeffrey Jones will always be known as Ed Rooney. and no one remembers that Ben Stein was one of Nixon's speechwriters, but every knows that he taught Economics!
Needless to say – my favorite? Bueller? Bueller?
For some reason, lately I've been saying "Screws fall out all the time. The worlds an imperfect place" whenever one of my kids complain about something being broken.
very sad, and the perfect quote.
I was so sad to hear this. Lifes just to short. I loved all of his movies, anything with the brat pack in was great.
