I’m always up for trying a new fitness class and I was stoked when my friend (and LMT/Yogi/Ironman extraordinaire) Lisa suggested we hit up a new gym in Tampa called Soul Rooster. The class descriptions all looked super fun and probably a challenge for my slightly uncoordinated self.
Lisa and I were really interested in Pound. According to the Pound Fit website, “Pound is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. The workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses into a 45-minute series.” (You can find studios that offer Pound HERE.)
Upon arriving at the gym we were greeted and signed the appropriate waivers. The gym is more dance/pilates/barre type set up and really funky, which I loved. We were then given our ripstix. These are bright green, weighted drumsticks. They were super fun to bang together throughout the class. There is a ton of info about the sticks on the Pound website in case you care to know why they are green and how much they weigh.
I had to take a photo of the bathrooms in this gym because they are wall papered with awesome old records. I love me some records and the ones they chose to use!

Sorry for the bad photo. |
The class is basically different tracks of music that focus on different things. For example: cardio, core, glutes, etc. The routines are fairly easy and only once did I look like a complete fool. At least I think it was one time. It could have been the whole class for all I know. Ha! I really enjoyed the core section as I know I need to get in more work there. Plus, the class went by so fast because I was focused on form and hitting the sticks to the beat. The instructor was awesome at showing us the moves before each song but I had a little trouble hearing her over the music at times. I watched the woman in front of me since she really knew her stuff.

Jason already made the Sriracha joke. |
The sticks do help you work your arms the entire class and we were reminded to make the motions sharp and quick. My arms feel a bit sore today and I love that feeling.
I would definitely recommend Soul Rooster and Pound if you are looking for a fun, new workout. I can’t say it’ll be added to my repertoire with my current Ironman training but I will go back when I have more time. I think it would be an awesome girls night out too!
*This is not a sponsored post. I just wanted to try a new class. This is review is because I felt like doing a review. I used a coupon for one free class that they had at a local coffee shop. See? Full disclosure. Ha!
I feel like this could go either way, either really fun or I could feel really silly. Or possibly both at the same time!
Sounds like fun!
A friend teaches this in Portland! So much fun!
That sounds like a blast! I need to look into that!
This class sounds like so much fun! I also love trying new workouts to mix things up. Think I'll have to see if anyone offers this around Denver!
Ha, as a Zumba fan – I bet I would love this. I will have to check out this studio!
Such a cool concept for a class. You know what it reminds me of…Miss Congeniality when they go play drums with the paint. Just had to throw that out there 😉
