“And bad mistakes, I’ve made a few. I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I’ve come through.” -Queen

The above line always makes me smile. Then as I’m smiling like a fool, I begin belting out the chorus. I’m fairly certain drivers of nearby vehicles, since I’m always having a car concert, either laugh or wonder if I’m insane. They probably do both.

This line makes me happy because it’s a reminder that we all make mistakes. Yes even the wonderfully talented Freddie Mercury admits to having made some bad ones. I freely profess that I too have made some bad mistakes. Awesomely bad mistakes at that.

And today, I’m thankful for mistakes.

As I may have mentioned in previous posts, I’m hard on myself. I make a mistake and get really bogged down in those thoughts of, “How could you be so dumb?” or “What the heck were you thinking?” Of course, as time passes I look back at these mistakes and think, “Well, I know never to do that shit again.”

Sure most of these mistakes aren’t too terrible as I’m not in jail or worse, but it’s always nice to look back at those mistakes and see just how far I’ve come or just how much I’ve learned. It’s also great to look at famous mistakes that turned out to be big time wins.

Take silly putty for example. It was a useless glob of glob until someone dude said, “Hey kids will love this useless glob of glob!” I’m using dramatic license here so just go with me. And we all know about penicillin being a big, fat, life saving mistake.

See, don’t you feel better now? No use crying over spilled milk. Or moldy bread.

What are you thankful for today?
