Here it is! Finally! My review of that waterproof iPod I had mentioned a few times before. Sorry it took so dang long. I know you could barely wait for it. Heh.
A company called Underwater Audio contacted me about doing a review for their Waterproof iPod Shuffle. I figured it’d be more fun to swim with actual music versus the tone deaf whale songs coming from my underwater attempts at American Idol. (In all honesty, I swear I sing better than some of those people who actually audition, but that ain’t saying much.)
I received the review iPod and well, it looked just like an iPod. I guess I figured it would be in a case but it’s a straight up regular ol’ iPod. It’s amazing how they waterproof it from the inside out. Directly from the horse’s mouth, er website:
“Underwater Audio uses a proprietary process that is unique to the industry to waterproof your iPod from the inside out, giving you a 100% watertight music player.”
It’s pretty smart, right?
In addition to the waterproof iPod, they sent me the waterproof earphones. I was skeptical about these because I have the worst time with earphones while running. I have big ears. With big ear holes. I can actually hear you laughing right now. You know. Because of my big ears. But, with these big ear holes, the regular iPod earphones always fall out. It’s a total pain in the…ear. However, these earphones do not fall out! They stay in so well that I may start using them on a run here and there.
The earphones come with a few options so you can really customize them to fit your ear holes. I did have to play around with a few options before I found the one that worked best for me. And, yes, water will occasionally get in there, but nothing that a quick tap won’t fix.
So how does the iPod stay on? Well, that’s super easy. You just clip it to your cap or goggles. See?
They also made the earphone cords short so that you don’t have to wrap them around your head nineteen times. I love that! It also can be used in saltwater, according to the site. I’ve yet to try an OWS with it. I wonder if fish like Uncle Luke?
Why yes, that is Tchaikovsky. Ok fine. It’s Trick Daddy. |
The waterproof iPod Shuffle and earphones bundle runs $165, which I think is a steal considering how long it’s supposed to last. (That’s a time will tell thing for me at this point. But so far, so great!)
I am super happy to report that I really like this product. I’d absolutely tell you all different if I didn’t. Pinky swear. I can’t wait to keep using it when my 2014 real tri swim training ramps up. I may never get out of the pool.
*Disclosure: I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a sample for review purposes. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience. And for the record, if I don’t like something, I’ll tell you.*
I talked with a guy at the pool last night that uses a K2, which you out an Ipod Shuffle into, then attach it to the back of your swim cap. He loved it. The best thing about this one too is that you can use the equipment, i.e. that old Shuffle that's been in a drawrer for two years, which does reduce the cost. How was the music while swimming?
It was great! 🙂
I have one from another company and gotta say I hated it. I could not get the earbuds to stay in my ears and even when they did, the water messed with the sound. I tried so many types of buds over the ear piece too but nothing worked right…ugh.
I've been thinking about getting one of those. I hate swimming and thought maybe it would make it a little less sucky
and yes… I was laughing about your ear holes… sorry
This looks great! If only I swam 😉
I didn't want to read your post because I now want one. It would be so great to listen to podcasts while swimming…something to add to my Christmas list in July.
Very cool! X-1 audio has a waterproof case for every size of ipod and the waterproof headphones too, but I haven't tried them yet. Their headphones work pretty good, and I hate earbuds too. So glad I'm not the only one. They keep falling out!
Oh no. I agree with (just) trying. I've now added something else to my list of things to want. I had a waterproof radio once that didn't work so I was interested to see how this was!
This one looks WAY better than the one I reviewed. Seriously. Glad this worked out so well.
Oh! I've been looking to get one of these. Great post! My birthday is in less than a month! 😉
I got a pair and thought it would be really cool and help the time go by faster in the pool, but I've had a really tough time with my playlist interfering with my swim stroke cadence. I guess my playlist is built for fast running, not methodic swim strokes. #distraction
I'm very intrigued by this. I was swimming this morning and thinking about how bored I was. I've worried a little about swimming with music since we can't do it in races, but I do think it would make training more enjoyable. Thanks for the recommendation!
